Background
For over forty years the Maharashtra Studies Group (MSG) has facilitated communication among scholars of Maharashtra and Marathi, and it is an officially recognized affiliate organization of the Association for Asian Studies.
On this site are reports of past meetings, conferences and publications, a list of members and their interests, and a collection of online resources for the study of Maharashtra, Marathi and related topics.
Aims
The Maharashtra Studies Group is a worldwide network of scholars with research interest in Maharashtra in its broadest sense. Topics that MSG members study include the history, politics, cultures, religions, and literatures of the region; urban studies of major cities; cultural forms such as theatre, art, and Bombay cinema; research on the region's many languages (Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, English, Kannada, Gujarati, Persian, Portuguese, etc.); and networks of Maharashtrians and Marathi-speakers in India and abroad.
Membership in the group is open to interested scholars, and all are welcome to attend the occasional MSG meetings at the Association for Asian Studies conference and the Madison South Asia Conference.
